Microsoft's ODF Concession

http://www.adtmag.com/blogs/blog.aspx?a=18876

The serious ODF watchers out there have heard the news by now, but the less standards-obsessed might be surprised to learn that Microsoft is now sponsoring an open-source project to create a translation bridge between its Open XML document format, set to be the standard in all future Office releases, and the OpenDocument Format (ODF), which was developed by the OASIS standards consortium.

New IT development marks the beginning of the end of 'can't open yours' culture

http://www.egovmonitor.com/node/6656

As part of its drive to reduce the cost of services without compromising quality, Bristol City Council today joined the Open Document Format (ODF) Alliance. The move is expected to make it easier to share documents in different formats and avoid the frustrating 'can't open yours' culture, which slows down work.

Forcibly Led To ODF Water, Microsoft Finally Drinks

http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2006/07/forcibly_led_to.html

It's not like Microsoft had much choice in the matter. Even Brian Jones, an Office program manager, admitted in his blog that it was government demands that pushed Microsoft to finally do it (after he made some snarky comments that the firm hasn't seen much demand for it from corporate or consumer customers). What I'm talking about, of course, is Microsoft's capitulation to finally support the OpenDocument Format (ODF), an XML-based file format for office applications standardized by OASIS in 2005.

Microsoft: on a journey?

http://www.ovum.com/news/euronews.asp?id=4556

This is not an announcement to be digested in isolation. It is an important step for Microsoft; providing ODF interoperability tools takes away the stick that many were beating it with. This will allow Microsoft to tackle head-on some of the concerns about document formats that had grown from a whisper to a groan in parts of the public sector. Viewing it in isolation leads to questions about why ODF and Open XML are both needed, or why the bifurcation came about in the first place. These questions are interesting, but not the most interesting aspect of the announcement. In our view this announcement is part of a cultural shift within Microsoft that sees it giving ever greater consideration to heterogeneity in the IT environment.

On document formats, Microsoft slowly bends to the customer's will

http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=3299

"The hi-tech world woke up to news this morning that Microsoft has finally decided to put some wood behind the OpenDocument Format (ODF). I deliberately chose the word wood instead of support even though most reports are construing this as some form of support. It is, but not in the way you'd typically expect."

Microsoft press release about ODF - it’s a start, but quit the FUD

http://www.sutor.com/newsite/blog-open/?p=783

Bob Sutor, IBM: "An Indian colleague just pointed me to a Microsoft press release 'Microsoft Expands Document Interoperability: Company to Sponsor Open Source Project for Open XML-ODF File Translation to Deliver More Choice for Government Customers and Their Constituents.' I had heard rumors that something important was going to happen. Maybe it will, but this isn’t it, yet."

Kicking and Screaming

http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/webmink?entry=kicking_and_screaming

Simon Phipps, Sun: "I'm delighted they have recognised the importance of ODF and no longer oppose it. In fact, I invite them to finally engage with the OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee, which they have long been free and able to do but for their public posture towards OpenDocument (which is only mending, not healthy, as Erwin points out). They would also be most welcome to join the other 220 organisations in the ODF Alliance. However, the move they announced today really is the absolute minimum they could do."

Microsoft Expands Document Interoperability: Company to sponsor open source project for Open XML-ODF file translation to deliver more choice for government customers and their constituents.

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/jul06/07-06OpenSourceProjectPR.mspx

Microsoft press release: "Expanding on its customer-focused commitment to interoperability, Microsoft Corp. today announced the creation of the Open XML Translator project. The project, developed with partners, will create tools to build a technical bridge between the Microsoft Office Open XML Formats and the OpenDocument Format (ODF). This work is in response to government requests for interoperability with ODF because they work with constituent groups that use that format. In addition to being made available as free, downloadable add-ins for several older versions of the Microsoft Office system, the translation tools will be developed and licensed as open source software. The translation tools will be broadly available to the industry for use with other individual or commercial projects to accelerate document interoperability and expand customer choice between Open XML and other technologies."

MS: OK. OK, we'll set up an "OS" project to build an ODF killer. Er, we mean translator.

http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20060706064747376

Pamela Jones, Groklaw: "As you can see, Microsoft says it is all about interoperability, Microsoft's version of same. Let's be real. If Microsoft were really about interoperability, the EU Commission wouldn't need to fine them millions per day for failure to allow competitors to have the means to interoperate. My baloney meter is ringing off the hook. The EU Commission has concluded that Microsoft's software is not "interoperable by design," and that Microsoft is fighting to avoid letting it ever be that way. The company apparently would rather pay millions per day than comply with interoperability demands from the EU Commission. What should that tell you? But hey, that's in a courtroom. This is PR. Two different worlds."

Open XML Translator project announced (ODF support for Office)

http://blogs.msdn.com/brian_jones/archive/2006/07/05/657510.aspx

Brian Jones, Microsoft: "Today we are announcing the creation of the Open XML Translator project that will help translate between the Office Open XML formats and the OpenDocument format. We've talked a lot about the value the Open XML formats bring, and one of them of course is the ability to filter it down into other formats. While we still aren't seeing a strong demand for ODF support from our corporate or consumer customers, it's now a bit different with governments. We've had some governments request that we help build solutions so that can use ODF for certain situations, so that's why we are creating the Open XML Translator project. I think it's going to be really beneficial to a number of folks and for a number of reasons."
