Clouds and grids - evolution or revolution?

http://news.eu-egee.com/news-detail/article/clouds-v-grid-5.html

This report compares grid and cloud computing services, taking a practical look at implementations of both: namely the Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE) project for grid and the Amazon Web Service (AWS) for cloud. Taking performance, scale, ease of use, costs, functionality and other aspects into consideration, the report looks at the overall opportunity that converging cloud and grid services can bring to users.

Thinking Beyond Today's Definition of Virtualization

http://www.sun.com/emrkt/innercircle/newsletter/0706vass.html

In "my letters I am building a stack of technologies that can help enterprises reduce data center costs, improve hardware utilization, and increase application availability and performance. In recent letters, we discussed how Sun's CMT processor can shrink data center requirements, how open source and OpenSolaris can improve security and application performance, and how open source middleware can help companies get the most out of legacy investments. In this issue, I am going to take a step or two back down the stack to discuss a hot topic for today's enterprises — virtualization."

Dynamic Trust Federation in Grids

http://eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/12377/

Grids are becoming economically viable and productive tools. Grids provide a way of utilizing a vast array of linked resources such as computing systems, databases and services online within Virtual Organizations (VO). However, today’s Grid architectures are not capable of supporting dynamic, ag-ile federation across multiple administrative domains and the main barrier, which hinders dynamic federation over short time scales is security. Federating security and trust is one of the most significant architectural issues in Grids. Existing relevant standards and specifications can be used to federate security services, but do not directly address the dynamic extension of business trust re-lationships into the digital domain. In this paper we describe an experiment in which we highlight those challenging architectural issues and we will further describe how the approach that combines dynamic trust federation and dynamic authorization mechanism can address dynamic security trust federation in Grids. The experiment made with the prototype described in this paper is used in the NextGRID project for the definition of requirements for next generation Grid architectures adapted to business application needs.
