Open Source and Cloud Computing

http://radar.oreilly.com/2008/07/open-source-and-cloud-computing.html

Tim O'Reilly: I've been worried for some years that the open source movement might fall prey to the problem that Kim Stanley Robinson so incisively captured in Green Mars: 'History is a wave that moves through time slightly faster than we do.' Innovators are left behind, as the world they've changed picks up on their ideas, runs with them, and takes them in unexpected directions. In essays like The Open Source Paradigm Shift and What is Web 2.0?, I argued that the success of the internet as a non-proprietary platform built largely on commodity open source software could lead to a new kind of proprietary lock-in in the cloud. What good are free and open source licenses, all based on the act of software distribution, when software is no longer distributed but merely performed on the global network stage? How can we preserve freedom to innovate when the competitive advantage of online players comes from massive databases created via user contribution, which literally get better the more people use them, raising seemingly insuperable barriers to new competition?

The Ignorance of Crowds

http://www.strategy-business.com/press/enewsarticle/enews053107?pg=all

By Nicholas G. Carr: The open source model can play an important role in innovation, but know its limitations. Ten years ago, on May 22, 1997, a little-known software programmer from Pennsylvania named Eric Raymond presented a paper at a technology conference in Würzburg, Germany. Titled 'The Cathedral and the Bazaar,' the paper caused an immediate stir, and its renown has only grown in the years since. It is now widely considered one of the seminal documents in the history of the software industry.

Advances in technology have revolutionized the way people live, learn and work, but these benefits have not spread around the world evenly. A digital divide exists between communities in their access to computers, the Internet, and other technologies. The United Nations is aware of the importance of including technology development as part of a larger effort to bridge this global digital divide. This article looks at how various United Nations agencies use free and open source software to meet the goal of putting technology at the service of people around the world.

Web Apps Get New Open Source App Server

http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189700068

A new open source application server is available for download from WSO2 Inc., a little known but highly regarded Sri Lankan firm of open source developers. It's Tungsten 1.0 application server is designed to handle Ajax and other scripting based applications more efficiently. The WSO2 stands for Web Services Oxygenation, perhaps an alchemist's way of saying it's time to activate a new generation of Web applications. Nevertheless, WSO2 is bringing a fresh set of concepts and standards to the notion of an application server, software that gives a Web site its ability to scale across many users. Application servers available today, such as IBM WebSphere, BEA Systems WebLogic, and Red Hat's JBoss, are written in Java and geared to run Java applications. WSO2's Tungsten 1.0 comes in both Java and C versions, with the latter offering some advantages when it comes to dealing with Web technologies. Many applications today are being written in the popular PHP scripting language, which itself is based on C, points out Sanjiva Weerawarana, a former IBM Web services developer who is CEO of WSO2. Tungsten is meant to process incoming XML messages and connect them to back-end SAP or other applications. "We take the XML payload and context and pass it to the application directly" without intermediate parsers or processing, says Weerawarana. Tungsten is designed to be a lighter weight application server, geared to emerging Web standards. It supports Web Services Description Language, WS-ReliableMessaging, WS-Security, WS-Addressing, MTOM, XOP, SOAP, and other standards, Tungsten works as an efficient distributor of XML and Javascript to browsers, as used in Ajax applications, Weerawarana says.
