ArenaNet, Valve, Ubisoft and Double Fine vets form a new “innovative” studio, Espace Possibility

There is a new studio on the block made up of developers who have worked in some of the biggest studios and series in the video game industry. Called Possibility Space, the studio is run by Guild Wars 2 developer, ArenaNet co-founder Jeff Strain, and it adopts an “innovative” model that brings together a team of veterans from studios such as Valve, Ubisoft, Double Fine. , EA, etc. together through an “ambitious, physically distributed” configuration.

It is not yet clear exactly what the brand new studio is working on, although press releases indicate that Possibility Space seeks to “create shared human experiences” and that Strain seeks to “redefine the gaming experience once again by line”. Strain himself says the team is developing a “happy game that has been [his] dream for many years ”. So everything is a bit of a mystery at the moment. Former Valve and Half-Life: Alyx game developer Jane Ng – who also previously worked as a senior artist at studio EA Maxis and Psychonauts 2 Double Fine – is the visual director of the new studio, while Austin Walker, previously Editor-in-Chief of Waypoint and host of the Friends at the Table podcast, is its IP Director.

Liz England, who was previously the Team Leader Game Designer at Ubisoft working on Watch Dogs Legion, is Possibility Space’s Director of Simulation and Storytelling Systems. Richard Foge, who worked as a combat designer on God of War and then at ArenaNet and the developer of State of Decay Undead Labs as lead designer and design director, respectively, is the studio’s design director. Brandon Dillon (formerly of Oculus and Double Fine) as VP of Engineering, Senior Narrative Systems Designer Leah Rivera (Undead Labs, ArenaNet) and Brian Jennings (NZXR, Magic Leap) as Director of technical design, while Charles Randall (Ubisoft, BioWare) and Erica Tam (Electronic Arts, Oculus) join as senior gameplay engineers.

The studio’s model is based on bringing together talented and experienced developers from around the world while letting them “live and work where they want”, with its headquarters in the US city of New Orleans.

“We thought it was a good time to create something new – a studio built from the ground up to embrace the evolving needs and perspectives of gamers and developers,” said Strain, who previously worked on Starcraft, Diablo, World of and Warcraft, as well as Guild Wars on ArenaNet and State of Decay games on Undead Labs.

“Like many others, the past year and a half has been a difficult time for me. While I am grateful that my family is safe, the anxiety, fear and isolation of the past 18 months has been almost unbearable at times. This fear and isolation has been the catalyst for Possibility Space, a modern game studio, where we create a happy game that has been my dream for many years.
