ARRI’s new ALEXA 35 camera makes you breathtaking, but an advanced 4K camera system with stunning images and a well-defined workflow from exposure to capture to publication

NEW YORK, May 31, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–B&H is pleased to announce that ARRI’s new ALEXA 35 camera is already making waves in the film world, and we are happy to bring you the latest information. Boasting a new sensor design and new color science, the ALEXA 35 is an all-new camera with 17 stops of dynamic range (2.5 more than previous ALEXA cameras) and a set of Familiar Super 35mm cameras with a wealth of dedicated accessories that will fit into established workflows on set. Truly a 4K camera that fulfills the original 4K mandates while utilizing a Super 35mm sized sensor, the ALEXA 35 not only delivers the technical specs, it also expands the creative potential of your images. This is a truly massive achievement by ARRI, and it does away with the two form factor approach of previous ALEXA cameras where the smaller version sacrifices some of the higher end features of the larger cameras. There’s no bigger version – the ALEXA 35 is compact, but doesn’t sacrifice any of the premium features. The ALEXA 35 is currently offered in several packs including a 15mm LWS Light Set for use on the go and a 19mm studio production Set suitable for more studio-oriented setups.

The sensor

ARRI has long stuck to its original sensor design for the ALEXA, refusing to squeeze in extra pixels that could hurt the image. However, now 12 years after the launch of the original ALEXA, ARRI has created a new Super 35mm sensor with 4K resolution without compromising the image. The new sensor has 17 stops of dynamic range with filmic highlight falloff, thanks to 1.5 stops of increased sensitivity in highlights and 1 stop more sensitivity in shadows. The sensor offers more contrast, sensitivity, and color, and it’s so improved over previous ALEXA sensors that during camera development, ARRI engineers discovered stray light contamination between the lens and sensor – the downside of such a wide dynamic range – which led to the development of lens flare suppression technology in the camera and in the five new lens mounts developed solely for the ALEXA 35 to help you get the sharpest images. Relentlessly pursuing the maximum from its cameras, and for you to get the widest dynamic range for your images, is the ARRI way, and the ALEXA 35 is one example.

The Super 35 sensor itself has a horizontal pixel count of 4.6K and can capture images at speeds of up to 120fps, which is impressive for a new sensor design; the ALEXA 35 has a standard ISO range of 160 to 6400 ISO. This range provides sharp images in a variety of lighting conditions, allowing you to take advantage of the sensor’s dynamic range and contrast. However, sometimes you’ll have no choice but to shoot in dark conditions with little or no access to lighting units, and that’s where the ALEXA 35 and its sensitivity mode improved won’t let you down. From 2560 to 6400 you can select the enhanced sensitivity mode, which produces a much sharper image compared to the standard ISO setting.

REVEAL Color Science and Imaging

To take advantage of the capabilities of the new sensor, ARRI has developed its own new color science that provides more realistic skin tones of all types and can reproduce subtle variations in tone. This allows you

to capture images with a palette that ranges from robust saturated colors to soft pastels. REVEAL color science uses a larger color space than the REC 2020 color space, but it doesn’t include virtual colors (colors humans can’t see), giving you a wide palette that’s easy to manage in post -production for fast color synchronization and easier color space conversions. In addition, the new color space is compatible with ACES.

REVEAL also uses an improved de-Bayering algorithm for better color fidelity and sharper edges, excellent for green and blue screen work. ARRI has also developed a new Log C tone curve, Log C4, to handle the extended dynamic range of the sensor, and new look-up tables (LUTs) for working with Log C4. REVEAL color science can also be used to process ARRIRAW from the ALEXA Mini LF and ALEXA LF which, while lacking the extended dynamic range of the new sensor, the new processing provides cleaner color edges and easier grading of your LF and Mini LF sequences. Another nifty feature, available with the ALEXA 35, is what ARRI calls textures. Textures can be chosen from the camera, like Look files, or like selecting a film stock. Each texture file is a combination of 30 image settings, and different textures can be selected for a variety of image needs to match shooting conditions for skin tones and sharpness.

The system

With its native 4K Super 35 4:3 sensor, the ALEXA 35 can be used with the world’s vast inventory of existing lenses – modern and vintage, anamorphic and spherical, Super35 and large format, so you can comfortably use your favorite glass . Equip the new ALEXA 35 with the existing ARRI LPL (LBUS) supportUse the ARRI PL to LPL adapteror for EF mount lens, use the ARRI EF mount (LBUS) and the camera’s built-in lens flare suppression system will work with any combination of lens and lens mount. However, for the best contrast, use one of the new lens mounts optimized for persistent light: ARRI PL Mount (LBUS) and ARRI PL Mount (Hirose). New MVF-2 viewfinder combines the familiar shape and controls of the previous model with a 500 cd/m² display compatible with HDR viewing. Mechanically, ARRI has developed a wide range of mounting and support accessories for the ALEXA 35 for better ergonomics and easy integration with your initial workflow.

Choose from 19 different recording formats, including ARRIRAW, Apple ProRes with in-camera downsampling, and anamorphic decompression. The camera housing has a multitude of connectors with an integrated antenna port for the ARRI ECS radio, a left camera screen and the back of the camera has a mechanical and electronic interface to slide in a multitude of accessories that have been developed to expand the connectivity of the ALEXA 35. The 24V camera can be powered in several ways, using the power input port, or adding a B-Mount Battery Plate to power the camera in its smallest configuration. Stack additional modules to configure your camera to suit the shot. If you need additional accessory power output ports, there is a module for that. Added the AEM-1 Audio Expansion Module lets you add SONOSAX audio expertise to your ALEXA 35, for premium mic preamps and clear audio capture.
