At the East Peoria studio, yoga is for everyone, even the “Clumsi”



When Kelsey Johnson left Crystal Lake for East Peoria a year ago, she was thrilled with the warm welcome she received from the community.

However, she was also somewhat disappointed to see that East Peoria lacked a piece of equipment that she considered important.

“There was no yoga studio this side of the (Illinois River),” she said.

Johnson had identified a need and then responded to it in July when she opened Clumsi Yogi in East Peoria. She said she chose the name as a tribute to her own perceived lack of coordination, as well as to reassure potential clients that they don’t need to be graceful to practice yoga.

“I’m really goofy,” Johnson said. “People are often hesitant to try yoga due to the misconception that you have to be flexible or coordinated to benefit from the practice, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Yoga is really meant to be for The name Clumsi Yogi is an immediate way for people to recognize that this studio is for everyone, especially those of us who aren’t necessarily graceful, coordinated, or flexible.

Kelsey Johnson recently moved to the Crystal Lake area and brought her love of yoga and meditation with her.  She opened her new yoga studio and shop Clumsi Yogi in July.

Clumsi Yogi offers yoga and meditation classes. Customers can attend a class for $15 or purchase punch cards of 10 classes for $130. Johnson also sells candles, oils and crystals as accessories for yoga and meditation.

Clumsi Yogi meditation guide Kelsey Robb praised the studio’s egalitarian approach to yoga.

“Each daytime yoga class is set up for different levels (of experience),” she said. Morning beginner classes are great. Each class is a good energy release, and we always have very good communication afterwards. It can benefit any community.

Johnson said when she arrived in East Peoria, locals welcomed her like a new neighbor. Now they make her feel welcome as a new business owner by providing her with a stable clientele.

“I didn’t have a clientele here to begin with,” Johnson said. “But everyone has been extremely welcoming. They were so kind and encouraging. I couldn’t be here without the support of the people of East Peoria.
