The dangers of in-game betting

The fastest growing form of online gambling is called in-play or run betting. It allows bettors to place bets after the start of an event. Over the course of a 90-minute soccer match, this opens the door to dozens of bets at once – like who will score the next goal or which team will see a player sent off. It’s betting without limits.

Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones is a specialist in gambling addiction and director of the NHS National Problem Gambling Clinic. She believes that in-game betting poses a significant risk for people vulnerable to addiction: “If you can have consistent bets throughout a game… it becomes endless potential for someone to destroy themselves because of it. of his addiction. “

“It got to a point where I planned to kill myself”

For another problem gambler, Craig, the in-game bets proved to be irresistible and utterly devastating – and almost cost him his life. “I think in-game betting is designed for addicts,” says Craig. Often times you’ll lose a bet – on who will score first, for example – in the opening minutes of a match. “Your bet is over, you panic,” says Craig. “You want to get the next bet right away and there is no restriction on how many bets you can place. “

Craig has placed 2.7 million pounds in bets over a four-year period. He started out with credit cards but then managed to take out four loans ranging from £ 20,000 to £ 25,000. “As far as I’m concerned, I had no way out of it,” Craig says. “I had ruined everything. I had suicidal thoughts. It got to a point where I planned to kill myself.
