For Shelley Roupas-Cantrell, owner and founder of Feel Better Yoga, practicing yoga can be a life-changing experience. When Roupas-Cantrell was in the midst of her divorce, she said she knew she had to do something to make herself happy – yoga did just that. The hot yoga studio located on St. Mark’s Church Road has been voted “Best Yoga Studio” by the Elon community.
“In yoga, I discovered that I could catch my breath and that everything would be fine,” said Roupas-Cantrell. “I found out that if I could be okay everything else would be okay, but it all started with me.”
The Burlington location was Roupas-Cantrell’s first studio to open in the past four years. Today there are two additional studios at High Point and Chapel Hill.
“Our mission is to share yoga with busy college students who need a chance to breathe,” said Roupas-Cantrell.
As you walk into the studio, you may notice that there are no bright lights or mirrors surrounding you. Roupas-Cantrell believes that watching yourself practice and the habit of looking in the mirror takes away your experience within. For her, yoga is not about your outward appearance, but rather your inner growth.
The FBY teaching team consists of 22 members who travel to the three locations. Classes are filled with young adults and people over the age of 70.
Sophomore Madi Keller started practicing at FBY in the summer of 2021 and said she continues to attend due to the mindfulness shared by the instructors and, of course, the workouts.
“FBY makes me feel like the best version of myself,” Keller said. “The teacher’s wise words with the mixture of sweating all the stress of the day have positively changed my attitude this semester.”
