Just a week before the start of LGBTQ History Month in October, it was announced that Billy Eichner’s upcoming film, Brothers, makes queer history in several important ways.

Not only is Eichner the first gay man to co-write and star in his own major studio film, but, in another premiere, Universal Pictures announced Thursday that Brothers will feature an all-LGBTQ main cast playing straight roles – overturning the usual and controversial Hollywood storyline. Further away, Brothers is the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio.

“I couldn’t be more proud or excited by the historic nature of the openly LGBTQ + distribution of Brothers. After queer actors have spent decades watching straight actors capitalize both artistically and professionally by playing LGBTQ + characters, it’s a long-awaited dream to be able to put together this remarkable and hilarious cast, ”Eichner said in a press release to Hollywood journalist

, who broke the news.

He continued, “And while Brothers may be the first of its kind in many ways, my real hope is that this is just the first of many opportunities for openly LGBTQ + ensembles to shine and show the world all that we are capable of as actors, beyond just being the goofy sidekick, queer token, or “gay best friend” of a straight movie star. And beyond all that this cast is fucking hysterical and you’re going to love them. “

The film directed by Judd Apatow has been reported as a clever, passed out, and heartfelt comedy about two gay men – Eichner and Luke Macfarlane (Brothers Sisters) “Maybe, maybe, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy.

“It’s the best thing EVER!” Eichner shared the news on Twitter. “I couldn’t be more excited to tell you that the ENTIRE main cast of my BROS com rom will ALL be openly LGBTQ + actors !!! Yes, even in all straight roles! This is a first for a major studio film. LET’S MAKE HISTORY !!! ”

Eichner wrote the screenplay alongside Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets, the most wanted Muppets), and stars also include TS Madison (Zola); Miss Laurent (Empire, United States vs. Billie Holiday), Symone (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Guillermo Diaz (Scandal, Weeds) and Guy Branum (The game show).

Eichner once called it a “miracle” that he was so successful in Hollywood as a gay man.

“No one even pretended 20 years ago. They just said, ‘Oh, you’re an openly gay man in comedy. Well, good luck on a gay cruise. The options were very limited, ”he told Yahoo Life in June. “The idea of being able to do this very LGBTQ-centric rom-com and really having my vision respected and appreciated, that seemed like a very foreign concept at the time.”

Eicher added that Brothers was only “four weeks from the shoot” before the pandemic shut down everything, including productions. Fortunately, it got better eventually.

“It gave me some time to stop and think about this project and the script and also life in general, for better or for worse,” he added. “It gave us time to sit down and reflect on our lives and how you want to spend your time.”

Brothers is scheduled for August 12, 2022 by Universal Pictures.
