Blackmagic Design Announces DaVinci Resolve 18

DaVinci Resolve 18 has been announced with major new updates focusing on collaboration, DaVinci proxy workflow, new AI-based Resolve FX, improved closed captioning and Fairlight Fixed to FlexBus.

DaVinci has quickly become a powerhouse in the world of video editing, and the latest update sees a huge leap forward in the collaborative tools it offers production teams.

These new video tools allow multiple editors, colorists, VFX artists and sound engineers to work on a project at the same time from anywhere in the world.

This collaborative way of working with video was made possible by Blackmagic’s Cloud, which enables hosting and sharing of projects and the new workflow.

The latest beta can be downloaded from the Blackmagic website; the links for that are at the end of this news post.

At the heart of this update are these new features that allow production teams to work together on a project. This new feature means multiple people can log into the Blackmagic cloud and work on the same project with the same files in real time from different locations.

To make this possible, Blackmagic has designed the brand new Blackmagic Proxy Generator which automatically creates proxies linked to camera originals. The proxy application creates media in H.264, H.265, or Apple ProRes format, which can then be extracted to separate folders for offline work.

This means teams can switch between original camera footage and proxies with a single click, with DaVinci doing all the hard linking work in the background, so there’s no manual reconnection of media.

A highly efficient workflow means those working on projects can live stream their DaVinci Resolve Studio viewer and display it on a remote computer or reference grading monitor to view DeckLink anywhere.

This ability to stream the 12-bit low-latency image enables remote color editing and grading.

New color grading tools

As color grading becomes more skilled and valued, Blackmagic has improved the tools available to colorists. In the magic mask palette, a new object mask can recognize and track the movement of unique objects. The DaVinci Neural Engine can intuitively isolate animals, vehicles, people, food and other elements for advanced dimming and effects.

A new depth map allows colorists to generate a 3D depth matte so the foreground and background can be scaled differently.

Advanced VFX power is available to apply graphics to surfaces that distort and change perspective, such as T-shirts, flags, or even the side of faces with a tracker.

The new Ultra Beauty gives advanced control over a subject during corrective beauty work by being able to address general blemishes by smoothing the skin and recovering detail to produce a natural effect for the subject.

Improved subtitle support has been extended to include TTML and XML with timed text and embedded MXF/IMF subtitles.

Fine-tuning options in Effect Library transitions now allows transitions to be reversed with a single click on a checkbox.

DaVinci Resolve 18 packs in a huge volume of additional features which we will cover in the full review soon. For now, here is the full list of new features.
