Just when I thought I could write about something else today, Canon pops up to let us know that they are announcing a new firmware update for the Canon EOS C300 Mark III and EOS C500 Mark II digital cinema cameras. What is this new firmware for? I hear you asking… Well this adds support for Frame.io Camera to the Cloud (C2C). Frame.io C2C enables forwarding low-bandwidth proxies to remote editors over the Internet for collaborative workflows.

You will still need a third party encoding device to be able to send these images to people as the cameras natively don’t have any type of Internet connectivity, but the new firmware update will provide support for these devices. You’ll have to wait a bit though, as it won’t be released until the end of May. Here is Canon’s full press release.

MELVILLE, NY, April 21, 2022 — Canon USA, Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced a firmware update for the Canon EOS C300 Mark III and EOS C500 Mark II digital cinema cameras. The new firmware will allow these cameras to be Frame.io Camera to Cloud (C2C) enabled devices. This state-of-the-art workflow can save valuable time, enabling cloud-based collaborative workflow in a variety of production environments, from scripted film and television production to reality television, documentary, advertising, etc.

Transferring footage from camera, set, or location, in the post-production workflow traditionally requires saving files to a hard drive and transporting or shipping the drives to another location to be ingested for publication. C2C workflow sends high-quality, low-bandwidth secure H.264 proxies, 4K 10bit 4:2:2 H.265 (HEVC) files and uncompressed audio files with timecode and file names files corresponding to the Frame.io cloud platform. Frame.io® is now an Adobe® company.

Using a third-party Wi-Fi, 5G, or LTE streaming encoder connected to the camera output, the Frame.io C2C workflow can automatically distribute clips to editors (or anyone else who needs them). need) when the director calls “cut”. This enables immediate review of footage on an authorized user’s device on or off set, anywhere in the world, allowing all stakeholders to watch production and collaborate in real time.

Canon says the new firmware update for the Canon EOS C300 Mark III and Canon EOS C500 Mark II to add third-party encoder support for Frame.io Camera to Cloud is expected to be available in late May 2022.
