CRAFT professionals from Germany, Greece, Portugal, Britain and Belgium traveled to South Carlow last week for an international craft center residency.

Organized by Carlow County Council and Garryhill woodturner Glenn Lucas as part of the Creative Europe Craft Hub project, the residency aimed to develop skills and knowledge in the woodcraft industry and encourage participants work in teams to demonstrate their skills in woodturning, decorating, surface treatment, coloring and more. Residency participants were invited to combine their efforts to develop collaborative work and extend their practice and reflection.

Speaking about the residency, Glenn said it was an inspiring week for everyone involved.

“The participants are used to working alone in the studio. In my workshop, they were invited to share ideas, communicate and plan with eight other people to create a completely original piece. Over the course of the week, everyone showed each other the different skills they had mastered and asked others to literally put their mark on their pieces. A rich visual library of technique images has been collected and is now stored in the CraftHub library and it will be a useful resource for those wishing to learn more about wood crafts and technique.

Kieran Comerford, economic and business development manager for Carlow County Council, said the residence and others like it supported career opportunities and increased knowledge of craft skills.

He added, “The concept behind the residency was to push the boundaries of craftsmanship through experimental manufacturing methods and the band really embraced that when creating their collaborative exhibit piece.”

Participants were Giorgio Romani (Italy), Hugh Roche Kelly (Belgium), Mathew Foster (Wales), Rune Hjelen (Norway), Robert Wiley, (Portugal), Nick Vorstermans (Scotland), Zacharias Thomaidis (Greece), Michael Koiliariakis (Greece) and Franz Keilhofer (Germany).
The CraftHub program includes 42 transnational designer residencies, 305 days of outreach, one festival, seven exhibitions and two conferences.
