The director of the PlayStation 4 game Days gone announced that he was now working at the Square Enix Crystal Dynamics studio. Earlier today, Crystal Dynamics announced that it was working on the next game in the Tomb Raider series, this time in Epic’s new Unreal Engine 5. However, shortly after this reveal, it was also leaked that the studio had now acquired a notable developer who was previously a free agent.
On Twitter this afternoon, Days gone director Jeff Ross revealed that he has now joined Crystal Dynamics. Ross didn’t say what he would specifically do with the studio, but he encouraged other developers to come and work with him. “I am delighted to announce that I am now working for the amazing Crystal Dynamics as Director of Design,” Ross said on social media. “That’s all I can say other than I’m thrilled with the project, and especially the team of really great people.”

I will become a Seattleite this summer.

Previously, Ross announced at the end of 2020 that he had left Bend Studio, which was the developer behind Days gone. Since then, there have been reports of how the company was at one point looking to create a sequel to Days gone, but those at PlayStation ended up shooting the project down. Ross has since continued to encourage fans to let Sony know they’d like to see The past days 2 done one day, even though it’s a project he apparently won’t work on even if it comes to fruition.
At this point, it remains to be seen what Ross will end up working on at Crystal Dynamics. Given that his announcement coincided with the reveal of a new Tomb Raider game, it seems likely that Ross will be developing this project. Without forgetting his experience on Days gone should surely translate well to Tomb Raider since both games are third-person action titles.
