Doctor Strange 2: Marvel writer condemns studio for ‘insulting’ offer after character he created was used in sequel


Marvel Comics writer Joe Casey has condemned an “insulting” offer to pay Marvel Studios for the use of a character he created in an upcoming movie.

Casey created the character America Chavez alongside artist Nick Dragotta for the 2011 comic Revenge #1.

America Chavez has gone on to appear in Marvel’s animated TV specials, video games and board games, and will appear in the upcoming MCU blockbuster. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The writer acknowledged that Marvel owns all rights to use the character, but claimed they gave him a “misery” when it was revealed the character would appear in Doctor Strange 2.

“The fact is, Marvel owns America Chavez. It’s not disputed on any level, but there are still systemic flaws in the way creators aren’t respected or rewarded,” he said. The Hollywood Reporter.

Marvel has not responded to Casey’s remarks at the time of writing. The Independent contacted the company for comment.

“Marvel paid me nothing for America Chavez, not just to appear in the strange doctor sequel, but in many animated TV episodes, for the many action figures they’ve made of her, for the video games that she’s appeared in,” Casey said. “They seem to be okay with that.”

“For me, it’s not about the money. It’s not even about respect,” Casey continued. “I would never expect to be respected by a company.

“If I’m in a position where I can afford not to take their insult from an offer, and be able to talk about it, maybe the next guy – where that kind of money could be life-changing – would get a good deal of receiving that money.

In Doctor Strange 2America Chavez, a teenager from another universe with the ability to travel between dimensions, is played by Xochitl Gomez.

“I’m a happy guy,” Casey added. “I am not unhappy. I am not bitter. Because I know that’s how it goes. I also know, that’s how you change things, by talking about it.
