Dulquer Salmaan, who completed a decade in the entertainment industry this year, worked at a construction company in Dubai before deciding to become an actor. The actor shared that he grew up “petrified” by the camera and the stage and was very doubtful of his acting skills. He was also afraid of the comparisons that would be made between him and his father, the popular Malayalam actor and filmmaker Mammootty. Dulquer worked in the construction company for two and a half years before realizing he didn’t like a desk job and wanted to keep playing. He signed up for a three-month course at Barry John Acting Studio in Mumbai and later made his debut with the 2012 Malayalam action drama Second Show. He has also acted in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films.
In a recent chat with Curly Tales, Dulquer revealed his reason for working in Dubai at a construction company despite coming from a film family and having an interest in acting. He said: “I thought I wouldn’t make it. No one will want to watch me. I thought I couldn’t perform, I was petrified by the stage and the camera. Not for nothing, but this constant kind of self-doubt and fear of being compared to my dad, so I thought about walking away completely.
The actor added, “Then I realized I wasn’t happy doing this. I’m not an office person, 9 to 5 type, it doesn’t give me any joy. It’s like And when I started doing shorts with friends who were trying to get into filmmaking and had no filmmaking background, I was like, ‘man, you got the guts. Why am I so scared?’ So one day I stopped everything, flew to Bombay, went to Barry John’s. Then it snowballed from there.”
Dulquer also recalled that while he was in Mumbai studying at Barry John, he also met some Bollywood casting agents. However, he got a terrible eye infection for which he had to return to Kochi, and he left the idea of Bollywood behind. The actor then made his Hindi film debut with the 2018 film Karwaan which also starred Mithila Palkar and the late actor Irrfan Khan.
