Creative studio Strike Anywhere has joined its modest AWESOME+ roster, a Los Angeles-based animation studio under the umbrella of director, writer, and animator Sean Donnelly.

“Sean and all the artists at AWESOME+modest continue to blow us away with their creative spirit and jaw-dropping visual craftsmanship,” remarked Ryan Simon, co-founder of Strike Anywhere. “With AWESOME+ modest joining, we are strengthening our collective ability to help brands, agencies and streamers reach audiences with content they want to watch.”

Raised in the quirky, countercultural beach town of Santa Cruz, California, Sean Donnelly founded his studio in New York after graduating from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Now based in Los Angeles, AWESOME + modest defines itself as an animation studio that plays with color and form while pushing the boundaries of reality. Blending design styles like stop-motion, painted animation, and cut-out photos, AWESOME+modest showcases the stories and messages of their clients like Netflix and Comedy Central, and artists like Bo Burnham.

“I think initially I went into animation because anything seemed possible,” Donnelly said. “Not only could I create the worlds I wanted, but I didn’t need a giant film set to bring the worlds to life.”

AWESOME+modest’s most notable projects to date include the stop-motion, paper-cut treatment of the Davis Guggenheim documentary Waiting for Superman; the American adult sitcom Jeff & Some Aliens, co-created by Donnelly; and the HBO documentary series The Lady and the Dale. After seeing the animation for the series, HBO tapped AWESOME+ modest to create the Clio Award-winning promo. The creation features a space-age yellow car driving through a dynamic desert and looks like a collage, as if every cactus and every mountain were cut and pasted from a magazine.

Between entertainment projects, AWESOME+modest recently completed a wild place for Santa Cruz’s hometown beverage brand, West Peak Sparkling Spirits, featuring illustrated cowboy skeletons, a bull rider and surfers in live sharing booze coolers in a wacky desert by the beach. environment.

“I’ve always loved the raw feel of drawing in a sketchbook or painting on canvas, and we’ve always tried to preserve that organic energy as much as possible while using the computer to bring things to life,” said said Donnelly. “I’m passionate about playing with different styles of animation and trying to go beyond what I’ve done before or what’s possible. A commercial is a perfect format for that, and I strive to try to pack as much visual excitement as possible into a short spot.

Previously represented by Anonymous Content in its early days, AWESOME + modest has created commercials and music videos for Microsoft, SCION, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, and more. It was around this time, years ago, that Donnelly first met Simon.

“Partners Ryan Simon and Mike Jacobs had AWESOME + unassuming handful design and animation for their Marvel documentary for Disney+. That’s what got us talking about other ways to collaborate and that’s where I got excited about officially joining forces with Strike Anywhere,” Donnelly said. “They know the business world very well and I admire the content they’ve produced over the years.”

Donnelly sees a bright future that will allow AWESOME + modest to hone its craft and expand its audience. A new original animated show with Adult Swim and a host of animations for upcoming documentaries for Hulu, HBO and PBS are underway as the studio joins Strike Anywhere.

Simon said, “Continuing to partner with the brilliant minds of AWESOME+modest, not just for original entertainment, but directly with the brand and with agencies, is a representation of our intent to create visual stories that spark curiosity. , regardless of genre or platform.
