Insta360 in partnership with Leica in 2020 for the launch of the One R 1 inch edition. Earlier this summer, the company announced another product co-engineered with Leica, the A 1 inch 360 RS edition. This new camera can shoot 6K 360-degree footage and 21MP 360 photos with dual 1-inch sensors delivering exceptional low-light performance.

Just before I started testing the One RS 1 inch 360 Edition, I had the pleasure of trying out the Insta360 One RS, which provides a modular camera setup with the ability to change lenses that work with the Core. This new model uses the same Core to power the new battery and large dual 1-inch CMOS sensors.

Exam: Insta360 One RS review: 1 compelling action camera, 3 interchangeable lenses

The modular camera system separates into three main components: the core, the lens, and the battery/mount. It’s a brilliant innovation and because I’ve only had it for a few weeks, I need more time to develop my in-depth review as I continue to capture the world around me with two of the three lenses available. . Luckily, Insta360 built the new One RS to be compatible with the older One R camera system so you can upgrade parts whenever you want and also be sure that future updates will also support supports the system you buy today.

The differentiator between this camera and the current One RS camera is the dual 1-inch CMOS sensor which was co-engineered with Leica. The large sensors help you capture high quality content in a variety of lighting conditions, and the power of Insta360 cameras in general is the ability to shoot all the content you want in 360 format and then edit it later. for exactly what you want to share. with the world. You don’t have to worry about changing modes or perspectives, so you can record a video once and then edit it in multiple ways to suit your needs.

The invisible selfie stick supported by Insta360 is also an option to use with this new large lens camera. Other accessories can also be very useful; I find the fast reader be a very useful tool to quickly transfer content from camera to smartphone without burning phone or camera battery capacity.

Camera software

You can load the Insta360 One RS 1 inch 360 Edition, insert a microSD card (up to 1TB) and start recording or capturing stills without any smartphone connection. The square LCD touchscreen supports taps and swipes. When it first turns on, it displays the current camera views; press once to bring up various status indicators. When these indicators are displayed, swipe left and right from the top to reveal all controls, including voice control, Bluetooth remote, and AirPods connectivity.

In the main camera, swipe up from the bottom to view images and videos you’ve captured previously. Swipe from left to right to move between all available shooting modes associated with the lens you have attached to the base. The number and type of available shooting modes vary between the three optional lenses. Swipe from right to left to access settings specific to the selected camera mode, such as aspect ratio, ISO, and white balance.

Insta360 smartphone software

The Insta360 free smartphone software is very well done and one of the best apps I’ve used for a camera experience on a phone. When you launch the app for the first time, you can create an account and then connect the camera. The camera connects via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for content transfer and camera control functions. In my experience, the connection between the camera and the phone was always fast and reliable.

The software offers tutorials to help you get the most out of your new camera, as well as content submitted by other users so you can also be inspired to capture your world.

So many options to capture images.

In the album view, you can see what’s been captured on your camera, then select content to download to your phone for further editing and use. Many viewing and editing tools are available: you can change the aspect ratio and speed and apply different types of enhancements. Multiview is an interesting option that supports displaying, for example, reactions to your video in a second window. FlashCut uses AI to find the best moments in your clips and edits them with music so you can quickly create and share interesting content with little effort on your part, which has always been one of the main challenges of capturing lots of video.

The One RS 1 inch 360 Edition can also be used as a webcam or live-streaming camera when connected to your smartphone or computer. You can also download and install Insta360 Studio desktop software if you want to view and edit your content on your computer instead of your phone.

At the end of the line

The Insta360 One RS 1 inch 360 Edition is available in a package of $799.99 which gives you the 1 inch 360 lens and cap, an RS core, a vertical mounting bracket for the 1 inch 360 lens, and a vertical battery base. If you already have a One RS Core unit, you can save $150 and purchase the lens upgrade pack for $649.99 instead. Insta360 also has two bundled options for $30 and $60 more that include other accessories.

Capturing content while hiking in Colorado.

Matthew Miller/ZDNET

I took the 360 One RS 1-inch edition to the streets of New York, to a local state fair to capture the sights and sounds of the rides and food, while hiking in the mountains of Colorado and at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It was great to share moments from those trips with family members who couldn’t be there with me and they enjoyed the 360 degree video. The camera also has an IPX3 water resistance rating, so you can even use it in imperfect weather conditions.

The camera did a fantastic job capturing clear video and stills in all situations and at this price it can be a good option for companies with use cases in mind, such as monitoring construction sites. of construction or the provision of virtual tours to customers. The powerful editing software is a major plus, with the AI making editing easy. I don’t have a lot of free time, so having software that can do the job for me is wonderful.

Alternatives to consider

The Insta360 One RS 1 inch 360 Edition might be one of the best 360 cameras available, but there are other options out there.
