Action cameras are known to be small, but the Insta360 GO 2 takes compactness and portability to the next level.
The ultralight device is also portable and comes with a versatile case that doubles as a charger.
It’s dubbed the world’s smallest action camera and is aimed at vloggers, POV videographers, and the creators of TikTok.
It’s so versatile and so much fun to use.
Design and build
GO 2 is a pill-shaped device that is not much bigger than a USB stick.
The camera has an innovative magnetic mount that keeps it secure no matter which mount you use.
Everything is white with rounded corners, and the camera sits at the top with the surface under a button that you press to activate.
When the camera is off, you press the button once to wake it up and start recording a video or twice to take a photo.
With the camera on, tap once to start video or twice to record hyperlapse video.
You also have more complete control of the camera from the charging case remote, which is roughly the same size as an AirPods Pro charging case.
It has a small OLED screen and two buttons to control the camera or change modes and settings.
The case has a 1/4 “screw mount at the bottom for attaching it to small tripods or selfie poles.
Insta360 GO 2 is so versatile and so fun to use.
You can capture photos and videos with the camera housed in its charging case, which will extend its battery life up to five times.
It only has a power / mode / record button and lens (removable), and the charging case adds mode and record buttons as well as tripod legs.
Video is only captured in 2K which is worth pointing out, but that’s not a problem for me as I love the portability of this device so much.
Note that the camera has a small 1 / 2.3-inch sensor (with an f / 2.2 aperture) and therefore produces its best images in daylight. I did not have excellent images at night.
On the plus side, GO 2 uses what the company calls FlowState image stabilization as well as horizon leveling, which helps ensure that your images are smooth and professional.
The timelapse and timeshift images I captured looked excellent. The other modes available are Slo-mo, Pro Video, HDR Video, and Standard Video and Photo.
Standard video mode uses stabilization built into the camera, and you cannot change the field of view when you export clips. But they are instantly accessible.
While clips in Pro mode must be exported via the app but allow you to change the field of view, from linear to ultra-wide for example.
Editing of your captures can be done using a smartphone app that offers a range of tools such as the ability to trim clips, change aspect ratio, add filters, music and adjust the speed of specific parts of your video.
The app can even edit your clips into a story for you.
There is also an Insta360 Studio desktop app that offers a full suite for Mac and Windows machines.
Insta360 provides a series of magnet-based mounts in the box with the GO 2.
These include a pendant that hangs around your neck (which is my favorite), a thick Easy Clip with a camera bay that can attach to the brim of a hat, for example, and a swivel mount that’s a mini tripod with a ball head. .
There is also a mount compatible with GoPro style mounts.
The magnetic pendant is meant to be worn under your shirt and is sturdy enough to keep the camera secure. You can capture great time-lapse videos with it when you walk or run.
And the swivel mount produces super timeshift sequences when attached to your car (inside or out).
By placing the swivel mount on the floor and using it as a tripod, you can also capture unusual and interesting angles for video and photos.
You can also separately purchase a mounting adapter pack for flexibility and an ND filter.
Battery life is rated at 30 minutes out of the case and up to 150 minutes in the case.
However, the 30 minutes drops significantly when used out of the case with the stabilization modes turned on.
Insta360 GO 2 is IPX8 rated and waterproof to depths of four meters. But the charging case is not waterproof so be warned.
It’s worth mentioning that you can’t live stream with it.
Photos taken with the camera are not as sharp or bright as those taken with a smartphone.
You can’t see a preview on the camera or case, but you can pair it with the app using WiFi to preview on your smartphone.
