Do cell phone videos of your epic races look like cell phone videos of your epic races? Would you like to have a camera drone above you or a whole film crew with you to capture your special moments?
I have spent a lot of quality time with the Ultimate motorcycle Yamaha Ténéré 700 Project Bike on roads and trails. However, documenting the fun was a challenge, until I rode the Insta360 A stable 360 degree X2 pocket camera.
When attached to the 120cm 120cm Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick using the Motorcycle Mount Kit (the base is an industry standard screw), you still have a team of voice-activated cameras with you. All you have to do is say “start recording” and the Insta360 One X2 comes to life with 360-degree stabilized 5.7K video capture, with wind noise reduction, at up to 30 frames per second. In 3K, you can record at 100 fps.
The Insta360 One X2 camera isn’t just for adventure recording. This will bring a whole new perspective to your Tail of the Dragon race or your first descent down Main Street in Sturgis. The speed on the screen and the visual route location indicator will wow your friends: “See? I told you that I took this turn at….
Keep in mind that it also logs errors in high resolution, so please drive responsibly.
While I can’t claim to have mastered Insta360, I’m starting to get used to it, enough to know that amazing videos are achievable with practice.
It took me a few short test videos to determine the best location to attach the mounting clamp to our Ténéré 700 project bike. The mounting clamp needs to be very tight for the camera to be 5.25 ounces, horizontally up. with four legs, do not slide the clamp down. Alternatively, it can be easily mounted on your helmet or any action camera mounting system.
The Insta360 One X2 has a small, high-resolution monitor for reading. You can control the recording and view your videos on your smartphone via bluetooth connection. You can even stream live video through your phone.
With the One X2 on the four-foot extendable invisible selfie stick attached to the motorcycle mount, the camera captures high-resolution video of you and literally all around you. The free Insta360 computer program guides you through the editing process to help you create unique and interesting videos in professional quality.
I’m using a 256GB microSD card, which the camera tells me will capture about five hours of high-res video. If you are serious about your video capture, I suggest you get a 1TB card. The internal battery will record for about 80 minutes. To record continuously for longer, you can plug it into an external power supply. While on a cross-country ride, you can set the Insta360 to time-lapse capture or, if you’re doing laps on a motocross track, you can set it to idle.
When paired with your Android or iOS smartphone, the video output can include GPS information such as speed, location, elevation, and grade. After capturing, you can edit the video directly on your phone. There are tons of instructional videos out there for creating all kinds of special effects. You can just shoot and view in high resolution, or go totally geeky with all the special effects built into the camera and Insta360 editing app.
Watch the sample videos in the video gallery below and you’ll see individual image captures that offer a whole different perspective on your ride than what your backseat partner can take with a cell phone camera. Keep in mind that the Insta360 One X2 is still capturing 360 degrees, so you can go back and identify which restaurant or antique store you passed at 65 mph. You can even create videos from different perspectives from the original capture. I started out with riding videos, and now I take him for hikes, to family events, and I’m working on a mount to tie to my dog.
It is important to remember to make a copy of your original video before editing it, as the Insta360 Studio 2021 app overwrites the original file.
There is so much you can learn to do with the Insta360 One X2 whether you want to watch the tutorial videos, or you can just take some fantastic selfie snapshots. You get plenty of tech for $ 430, including waterproofing up to 33 feet, four microphones that intelligently reduce wind noise, a stable camera, smart tracking, and artificial intelligence. The motorcycle package increases the price to $ 507. The possibilities are endless when you have a camera crew in your pocket.
