FedUP Studio Lab was started by two creatives who were “fed up” with the London studio scene, so they decided to quit to start their own ethical and sustainable business in Hebden Bridge.

The company, which was advised by the AD:VENTURE business support program, now counts Google, WWF, Uber Eats and Discovery Channel among its customers.

Alixe Lobato, who is originally from Spain and moved from London to Hebden Bridge, and Federico Parodi, who is Italian and still lives in London, set up FedUP in 2020.

Ms. Lobato then brought in Tim Day as head of marketing.

Mr Day said: “It is an international network of people who all work remotely and who all have different skill sets who collaborate well together. And what that allows us to do is attract talent from all over the world. So if a project is going in a certain creative direction, we can bring in the right talent from our pool for that specific job.

“You get a really rich tapestry of people. It’s a really good eclectic mix from all over the world.”

Its remote operation allowed it to continue to operate during confinement.

Ms Lobato said: “It was a game-changer, but not in a bad way, because one of the issues we had before was convincing customers that remote working is sustainable and good. And when Covid arrived, we were ahead of the curve.

The company works with B Corps – companies that put social and environmental values at the heart of their work – and with charities and other ethical organizations.

In addition to working on customer orders, FedUP also creates its own content on topics such as a Syrian refugee’s story.

“That’s where we put our hearts and our efforts as well, to develop more experimental techniques, so that we can introduce innovation to our customers,” Ms. Lobato said.

A spokesperson said: “Alixe, Tim and Federico have been supported by a business mentor from AD:VENTURE, which is partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and supports businesses in the region. of Leeds City who are pre-starters or less than three years old.”

Mr Day said: “The mentor was very good at grounding us and getting us thinking about a strategic business plan and everything you need to create a strong foundation for the business.

“It’s a great sounding board to be able to talk about your ideas, any idea, without feeling like you’re being criticized or judged. It really helped. The support has been really valuable.

The business now has a team of 10 associates, with plans to increase this to 30 and open a production studio in Hebden Bridge which can be rented out.

AD:VENTURE was launched in 2017 and has since helped nearly 3,000 businesses and 2,000 individuals with free support including mentorship, workshops, webinars and grants, and helped create over 600 jobs.

Funding and delivery partners for AD:VENTURE include the City Region’s nine local authorities, Leeds Trinity University, the Prince’s Trust, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce .

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategy, Councilor Jane Scullion, said: “Programs like AD:VENTURE offer advice to help businesses build a stable base and grow – while supporting a stronger economy.

“It’s great to see a truly exciting and forward-thinking company based in Calderdale and I’m thrilled the AD:VENTURE program is helping them thrive.

“Remote work means entrepreneurs can be based anywhere, and Calderdale is a great choice because of our fantastic communities and great business support.”
