Microsoft announced the new Surface Studio laptop with a new hinge design that transforms it from a standard laptop into a designer canvas that invites the use of a pen for drawing and photo editing. .

The Microsoft Surface Studio laptop is powered by the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU and one of the two 11th Generation Intel Core quad-core processors (i5 or i7). It comes with 16 or 32 GB of LPDDR4x RAM.

The laptop is designed to accommodate different physical configurations to allow better use in different scenarios. It can sit like a traditional laptop, but can also use a new hinge to bring the screen closer to the user and cover the keyboard, but also lie completely flat to allow a more comfortable position for using a pen. Speaking of stylus, it uses the new Surface Slim Pen 2 which can slide under the lip on the front of the computer to store and charge it. The laptop also uses touch gestures and voice input.

Besides the hinge, Microsoft’s design is different from most other laptops on the market. The Surface Studio Laptop is quite thick, and the cooling system visible under the keyboard and trackpad is inserted into the rest of the computer’s body, allowing the aforementioned lip that the Slim Pen attaches to. So the laptop isn’t particularly thin: it measures 12.7 x 9.0 x 0.7 inches and weighs up to 1,820.2 grams (about four pounds).

Revisiting the articulated screen, it’s a 14.4-inch 2400 x 1600 “PixelSense Flow” display that refreshes up to 120Hz. Microsoft claims to have a 1500: 1 contrast ratio, support Dolby Vision content and support 10-point multi-touch. Details on what to expect with regards to color accuracy have not been provided, although Microsoft is touting it as having “true-to-life colors.”

The Surface Studio laptop has 2 USB 4.0 ports with Thunderbolt 4 support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a single Surface Connect port. It doesn’t appear to have an SD card port or camera media card support for that matter. It has a removable SSD available in capacity options of 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB.

The Microsoft Surface Studio Laptop is available for pre-order now from $ 1,600 for the Intel i5, 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of configuration and SSD storage ranges up at $ 3,100 for the Intel i7, 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of SSD storage. It will start shipping on October 4.
