Record a fundraiser in the Amazon rainforest with HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro from Blackmagic

MALIBU, California—As a seasoned video professional, I take pride in working for worthy causes. Recently, my team and I worked with Los Angeles-based event company NK Production to help launch “A Return to Origin,” a fundraising campaign to benefit the Amazon Prophecy Project. Hosted by Reverend Patrick McCollum and the McCollum Foundation, which specializes in conflict resolution by raising marginalized and indigenous voices, the one-year campaign aims to raise funds to save the Amazon rainforest and preserve indigenous cultures with special monthly fundraising events.

The campaign kicked off on Thanksgiving Day with a worldwide live broadcast, and we were asked to provide our flypack system. We had to capture many important elements, including speeches by Jane Goodall, Dr Vandana Shiva, Chief Phil Lane, Ambassador Chowdhury and other notable visionaries, as well as performances by Indigenous artists Kandy Maku and Olos.

Set up to give back
To capture those moments, we used a number of Blackmagic Design products, including five HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro broadcast decks, one to record the program stream and the other four to record the ISO streams from the camera.

We also used a URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 camera on a 24ft Jimmy jib and three URSA Broadcast cameras, with one on a camera slider next to the stage, one for inversions and side shots, and one at the back of the house with a Canon XJ72x9.3BIE-D 72x HD Box lens. Everything was transferred to our Videohub 40×40 router and then to our ATEM 4 M / E Broadcast Studio 4K mixer paired with an advanced ATEM 2 M / E panel for control.

I then routed the program stream to the first HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro, and the four cameras went to the other four HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro, which were equipped with 1TB SSDs. NK Production provided the media server for playback. video and received the feeds from my camera from our mixer for streaming.

H.264 and H.265 recording
We recently added the HyperDeck Studio 4K Pros to our arsenal so that we can take advantage of H.264 and H.265 recording capability. Today, some formats are not always useful because the files can be monsters to move. Recording H.264 at 1080p and H.265 at 4K is essential for us, especially when most things are streamed online and we don’t need larger files. We found the recorders to be incredibly portable and with our setup and system design we were ready for camera input in about 20 minutes.

We like having the ability to transfer files directly from the HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro to the Internet or customer sites for footage. Customers appreciate this and it also provides archive backup with USB-C drive attachment. We also like the reliability of the HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro, not only that it performs very well whatever type of event we host, but also that the SSD drive modules can be replaced. if they wear out due to intensive use. We use them so often that it is important for us to keep them running reliably for many years to come.
