Tired of co-op shooters that focus on zombies? How about a game where you and up to three of your friends take on aliens instead.

Alienation is a shoot and loot digital download title for the PlayStation 4. It is a four-player co-op game in which you must shoot a horde of aliens as they try to tear your team to pieces.

I first saw the playable version of the game at a Sony event this week. Finnish developer Housemarque previously created the refined action games Resogun, Dead Nation, and Super Stardust on the PlayStation Network. It’s kind of like Left 4 Dead, but played from a different perspective. The graphics are beautiful and quite colorful, just like the previous games. These made Housemarque famous for his explosions. In this game, instead of zombies, you shoot aliens.

Each player has a different role. I played a Tank character in the pre-alpha game. The team showed it at Gamescom last August, but they haven’t shown it until now. As a Tank, I had to make sure I followed the leader and filmed everything in sight. It’s a top-to-bottom 2.5D perspective. If I hit the share button, I could give a shield to everyone in my party. This has proven to be a lifeline during boss fights.

Alienation uses dual-stick controls. The left stick controls movement and the right stick is the direction of your weapon. You shoot with the R2 button, and I pretty much kept my finger there the entire time during the battle. You can throw a grenade with L2, melee with R1, and rush with L1. This comes in handy when you are stuck and need to escape. It’s fairly easy to access but difficult to master.

The explosions from grenades and other sources are quite pretty, with plumes of smoke rising in the air. Much of the environment is destructible, but not all of it. You can blow up trucks and eliminate a group of aliens. Housemarque created a proprietary engine to build the game, and this is the first time he has made a four-player game.

You shoot and collect the loot until you uncover the truth behind the alien invasion. During this time, you can change your character class, improve your skills, customize your weapons, and compare your stats to those of other players.
