Adult Swim has released a new Rick & Morty short created by the animation studio behind Netflix’s Ultraman anime, which sees Rick make his way to Akihabara.
Rick and morty bring chaos to Akihabara in a new short film produced by the studio behind the Ultraman lively.
Entitled The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara, the new eleven-minute short film was released directly on Adult Swim’s official YouTube channel and will also air on Toonami on October 16. The short was produced by Sola Digital Arts, the CG animation studio behind Netflix Ultraman anime, which will begin its second season in spring 2022. The studio is also handling the animation for Blade Runner: Black Lotus, new Blade runner spin-off from the creators of Ghost in the Shell: Self-contained complex. Black lotus is produced in co-production between Adult swimming and anime streamer Crisp. The short film was directed by Masaru Matsumoto, who previously directed the Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars Animation Film.
The new short sees Rick and Morty travel to Akihabara’s otaku heaven in order to locate a specific type of screw that Rick needs to fix his faulty toaster. Once there, Morty becomes addicted to Japanese coffee shops, while Rick reunites with his Japanese rival, Yamada Q-Saku, a scientist who was locked in an underground laboratory by Rick 30 years ago. Rick and Q-Saku’s argument ends up degenerating into Pacific Rim-style, all-round giant robot against kaiju battle.
The short film is presented with a Japanese audio track, which features Yohei Tadano as Rick and Keisuke Chiba as Morty. Tadano has previously starred in a variety of anime franchises, including Get robo, Edens Zero and Psycho-Pass. Grancrest’s war recordSummer’s Akiha Matsui also provides Summer’s voice, while Space battleship YamamotoYoshito Yasuhara gives the voice of mad scientist Q-Saku. Miho Sakurazaka plays the role of Milk-Chan, the good cosplayer of undetermined age.
This is not the first time that Rick and morty hired an animation studio to produce a short film for the series: Studio Deen, the animation company behind Basket of fruits and Crafted in the Abyss, previously created a five-minute short for the comedy show that aired in 2020.
Rick and morty was created by Justin Roiland and Communityit’s Dan Harmon. The series was developed from an animated short film created by Roiland that parodied the Back to the future movies. The series premiered in 2013 and has grown into one of Adult Swim’s most popular shows. The series recently aired its fifth season, which ended in early September. The show’s first four seasons are available to stream on HBO Max.
