There was a time when getting a first part PlayStation title, a gamer should own a Sony console. Now, it looks like that idea is being phased out, as more and more PlayStation exclusives are being brought to PC, expanding the list of hardware that can play games made by the blue brand. Marvel’s Spiderman is the latest PlayStation exclusive to be brought to PC, and soon The Last of Us: Part 1 will also be available for mouse and keyboard users.
However, it looks like Sony doesn’t want to stop bringing its older titles to PC. Last year, gamers speculated that Sony might be looking into the mobile gaming market as a patent was spotted for a new PlayStation mobile controller. Now, Sony has announced its new PlayStation Studios Mobile division, which will focus on making games for handheld devices. Additionally, it has been revealed that German developer Savage Game Studios has been acquired by Sony as part of this new division.
Savage Game Studios is a relatively new development company, founded in 2020. However, it looks like PlayStation has high hopes for the studio as it is reportedly working on a new AAA action title. Additionally, Savage Game Studios has experienced developers at its helm, co-founded by veteran video game creators formerly employed at Rovio, Zynga, and Insomniac. The studio itself, as the name probably suggests, is focused on creating action games that also feature narrative experiences.
As for the upcoming AAA action title, so far PlayStation hasn’t given fans many details, but according to PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, the game will be a live-action release. Hulst didn’t reveal anything like a potential release date, but he said he was “excited for what [Savage Game Studios] will be able to do. For those concerned that Sony is moving away from its console development to create more mobile games, Hulst had some words of comfort. “Our efforts beyond the console in no way diminish our commitment to the PlayStation community,” Hulst said and followed up by reaffirming PlayStation’s commitment to more single-player experiences.
It looks like for the foreseeable future, PlayStation is sure to have some exciting single-player releases slated for 2022 and 2023, including God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Plus, Sony has a whole host of other single-player franchises it could build on beyond these releases, including the Horizon games and The last of us, if Naughty Dog were to create another entry in this series. It looks like PlayStation’s growth in mobile titles won’t threaten the production of console versions, then. If anything, there could be some interesting new games coming from PlayStation Studios Mobile, including a rumored standalone. Fate moveable title.
