PARAMUS, N.J.—Sony has announced that first shipments of Sony’s flagship VENICE 2 digital cinema cameras have been received by rental companies and Sony specialist dealers and that V2 updates will be available in early 2023.

The company also reports that the VENICE 2 has already been used in high profile commercials with cinematographers such as Claudio Miranda ASC, Newton Thomas Sigel ASC, Tommy Maddox-Upshaw ASC and Rachel Morrison ASC.

Equipped with a new 8.6K full-frame image sensor, the VENICE 2 system can capture stunning images in any format, including full-frame, Super35 and anamorphic, all at the 4K+ resolution now demanded by many. many streamers and studios.

Sony reported that director and cinematographer Gonzalo Amat ASC tested the VENICE 2 around New York in November and will be using it for the upcoming season of the Netflix series “Outer Banks.”

“VENICE 2 has the new 8.6K full frame image sensor and Dual Base ISO which is really important and can now move between 800 ASA and 3200. The quality of the sensor is top notch,” did he declare. “Latitude, colors and highlights – everything was even sharper than before while using a menu similar to what I was used to. You can take photos on a very bright, sunny day without losing detail, as well as rendering the color and skin tone of faces. It’s really very cinematic. It doesn’t feel electronic, it’s more like a camera.

In addition to its use on high-end commercials before its official release, the VENICE 2 is already used on feature films and episodic work with cinematographers Claudio Miranda ASC, Gonzalo Amat ASC, Rob McLachlan ASC, CSC and Salvatore Totino ASC.

“We are using the new VENICE 2 8K camera on my new feature film and everything is going well. The ASA 3200 is amazing. All of our nights are shot in this ASA,” Miranda said.

“We have now been shooting the new LA mystery thriller series ‘Color Noir’, ‘American Gigolo’, with two Sony VENICE 2 cameras for eight weeks,” added cinematographer McLachlan. “Every day, in all conditions and in all settings, he continues to impress. Whether it’s at night, dawn, in the studio, on nights in the city, or at midday and sunset in the desert, the reflections disappear naturally and our actors look beautiful.

“The nighttime cityscapes almost light themselves up, and I use less light control than ever before,” he added. and pleasing images are at ISO 3200. And we tested it at ISO 6400 and even 12800, and it still looks really good. Not just usable but beautiful.

VENICE 2 builds on the strength of the original VENICE. It captures extraordinarily immersive detail, 16 stops of dynamic range, extreme low-light sensitivity, vanishing highlights and natural, film-like skin tones with its smooth finish. VENICE 2 is also available in a smaller, lighter package with the ability to capture X-OCN and 4K Apple ProRes 4444 and 422 HQ internally.

Following market feedback, Sony has also announced that it will enable a number of new features in early 2023 when V2 is released. This includes additional imager modes:

  • 8.6K 17:9 up to 48 fps
  • 8.2K ​​2.39:1 up to 72FPS
  • 8.1K 16:9 up to 48FPS
  • 5.8K 4:3 up to 60FPS
  • 5.5K 2.39:1 up to 120FPS

Additionally, a next-generation expansion system for the VENICE 2 8K is expected to be released in early 2023.
