Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm Tease Zen’s Short – Grogu and Dust Bunnies

Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli is one of cinema’s most respected and beloved creative forces. Lucasfilm, the studio founded by George Lucas that gave us star wars, IndianaJones, willow, and more, is also a cinematic icon. So what if these two creative titans joined forces? Well, we are about to find out.

After cryptically teasing the dream collaboration recently, this afternoon Disney announced Zen – Grogu and the Dust Bunnies, a new original short from the acclaimed Japanese animation house, premiering tomorrow night on Disney+. The hand-drawn animated short, directed by Katsuya Kondo with music by Ludwig Göransson (The Mandalorian, Wakanda Forever), was created to celebrate the third anniversary of Disney’s streaming service, as well as the launch of the first live-action star wars TV series, The Mandalorian.

Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm both teased us with the mysterious collaboration this week. It started on Thursday, when Ghibli’s official Twitter account sent out a brief video that’s simply an amalgamation of the two companies’ logos, suggesting that Ghibli was gearing up to announce some sort of Lucasfilm-themed project. The internet took notice, and fans quickly got excited.

Lucasfilm did not immediately say what exactly Ghibli was working on or what franchise they might star in. The studio appeared to clear that up, while adding more fuel to the speculative fires, earlier today, tweeting an image of a small Grogu figure sitting on a table, its base adorned with The Mandaloriansignature credo, “This is the way.” To make things even more exciting, the blurry figure in the background of the shot appears to be legendary Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki.

So we knew a Lucasfilm/Ghibli team-up was in the works, and things were not only leaning in the direction of star warsbut of The Mandalorian More precisely. Before knowing the answer, we imagined a possible hypothetical scenario: thinking of something on a small scale, we thought it was possible that the studio was preparing an episode, or several episodes, of the Disney+ series. Star Wars Visionswhich features short films in various styles of animation and storytelling set throughout the star wars galaxy. While we don’t know if Zen – Grogu and the Dust Bunnies falls into the Visions format, it’s still a major blow for Lucasfilm, and it’ll be great to see what they come up with.

We will find out tomorrow, November 12, when Zen – Grogu and the Dust Bunnies debuts exclusively on Disney+.
