UK studio Microbrand Underd0g has turned last year’s April Fool’s joke into this year’s charity fundraising show.
Founder Richard Benc posted his eggplant-inspired watch concept on the brand’s Instagram on April 1, 2021, the joke included mention of the real eggplant skin used on the dial which “would crinkle beautifully with the time” with the watch’s smoky textured dial reminiscent of the vegetable’s purple and green color palate.
A year later, a version of the watch – without any reference to the real Aubergine skin – is back in the form of a 50-piece limited edition chronograph in collaboration with the watch’s website, Fratello Watches. All proceeds from the £500 GBP (approximately US$660) watch will go to Cancer Research UK for testicular cancer research.
Studio Underd0g has based its brand on colorful modern dials paired with Chinese movement manufacturer Seagull’s ST-1901 mechanical chronograph movement. The Chinese Air Force purchased the tooling and technical drawings for the Swiss Venus Cal.175 chronograph movement in the early 1960s and Seagull has been manufacturing them ever since. Each watch is inspected, degaussed and, if necessary, regulated in the UK before dispatch, accompanied by its own bulletin.
