Suspect of stolen car shot dead by police in village of Atwater

LOS ANGELES, CA — A man suspected of stealing a car in Glendale was fatally shot by police Thursday following an accident in the adjacent village of Atwater.

Glendale Police Department officers attempted to arrest the man at the intersection of Los Feliz and San Fernando roads around 4:45 p.m., according to a department statement.

The suspect attempted to flee, but crashed into a car parked in the Tyburn Street and Atwater Avenue area of ​​Atwater Village.

“The driver exited the armed vehicle and a shootout involving an officer occurred,” according to the GPD. “A firearm was recovered from the suspect.”

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. His name has been withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

A passenger who was also in the stolen vehicle tried to flee, but was quickly arrested by the police.
