It’s no secret that Shonda Rhymes Grey’s Anatomy is the oldest medical drama All Time TV Series. Now, after 19 seasons, fans of the show have seen it all. From a bunch of major character deaths at most bizarre medical cases.

Recently, Dempsey dispelled rumors that he was terrorizing the Grey’s Anatomy together, which would have led to her character being canceled in the show’s eleventh season.

Patrick Dempsey only got the role of Derek Shepard because another famous actor didn’t want him

In 2005, Dempsey debuted as neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. Despite playing that character so well for 11 seasons, it turns out Dempsey wasn’t the first option for the role. He was only cast after Rob Lowe refused to play this beloved character.

Derek Shepherd, also known as McDreamy, was Meredith Gray’s (Ellen Pompeo) love interest throughout the show’s first eleven seasons. Dempsey’s acting quickly made this character a fan favorite. That’s why fans were devastated to see this major character get killed off the show in the Grey’s Anatomy season 11 finale.

“It’s been long enough. It was time for me to move on to other things and other interests. I probably should have moved on a few years earlier. I stayed a little longer than I should have,” he explained.

In the moment after he left, it seemed killing Derek Shepherd had been a joint decision between Dempsey and series creator Shonda Rhymes. But Lynette Rice’s unauthorized book about what really happened behind the scenes of this medical drama made fans believe there were other reasons to cut Dempsey from the show.

Dempsey’s behavior in the Grey’s Anatomy Set could have been the real reason for his departure

In How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s AnatomyLynette Rice revealed that cast members and producers were unhappy with The problematic behavior of Patrick Dempsey on the tray. It seems Dempsey’s behavior ultimately led to the decision to kill off his character, Derek Shepherd.

Apparently Dempsey once walked into a fight with Isaiah Washington, who played Dr. Preston Burke in the show’s early seasons. And, in her book, Lynette Rice revealed that she wasn’t the only cast member Dempsey had run-ins with. “There was talk about Dempsey’s diva fits and the tension between him and Pompeo,” she wrote.

Parriott talks about alleged “human resources issues” with Dempsey, saying the actor constantly terrorized the set. “He had this grip on set where he knew he could shut down production and scare people. The network and the studio went down and we had sessions with them. I think he was just finishing with the show. He didn’t like the inconvenience of coming in every day and working. He and Shonda were at each other’s throats,” Parriott said.

Although Patrick Dempsey did not reveal what really happened on the set of Grey’s Anatomy, it looks like the actor doesn’t seem to hold any grudges. After all, he returned to the show in 2021 for four episodes.
